Antioxidants

Did you know that certain foods consumed daily contain critical compounds, namely antioxidants?

To become more familiar with these foods and enhance their use in your diet, here’s a brief summary of foods you should choose:

•  Berries: raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, whortleberries, cranberries, blackberries, cherries
•  Cruciferous vegetables: cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, turnip, watercress
•  Alliaceae: garlic, onions, leeks, chives
•  Tomatoes
•  Turmeric
•  Red wine
•  Green tea and cocoa

A wide variety of fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, as well as many vitamins, especially C and A, and several minerals.

Canada’s Food Guide suggests choosing dark green, orange or red vegetables as they contain the most vitamins.

To ensure a healthy diet, allow yourself to be tempted by an array of colourful and tasty fruits and vegetables available on the market in all four seasons.

Helpful hints!
To increase your consumption of foods containing antioxidants, try these tips:

•  Add berries to your fruit salads, green salads, yogurts, milkshakes, muffins, cereals and even the sauces accompanying meat dishes.
•  Incorporate turmeric into your favourite sauces, vinaigrettes and mayonnaises.
•  Choose green tea or hot chocolate made from 70% cocoa as your hot beverage.

Did you know?
Antioxidants are responsible for the vast majority of the red, pink, orange, blue and mauve colours of many fruits and flowers.
